Mr. Cedar's Wood Duck Nest Boxes
We have made so many wood duck houses the ducks
think they are coming home!

These nest boxes feature sturdy 3/4" cedar
construction for years of nesting. Simple, secure keyhole mounting is
found on the back, entrance hole is 3 1/4 x 4", and a grooved ladder sawn
into the front boards provides a permanent method for ducklings to climb
out. Top and front are removable for easy maintenance. Mounting instructions
and screws are included as well as a bag of wood shavings for nesting

Box dimensions without roof are: outside 10-3/4 " wide by 23" high
by 12 " deep, inside 9-1/4 " wide by 21-1/2 " high by 10-1/2 " deep, with
bottom of whole 15-1/4 " from floor. Roof measures 11-1/2 " wide by 15-1/2
" deep, to give overhang. |

Wood Duck House Mounting Instructions:
Wood duck houses can be erected on isolated
trees (avoid Aspen) or on 16 foot long 4 x 4 inch posts of cypress, cedar,
or preservative treated wood. Heights above 20 feet seem to be preferred
on trees. An aluminum or tin sheet should be nailed lengthwise around post
under the house to discourage squirrels and raccoons from entering. (Used
aluminum printing plates may be available from newspaper offices.)
Since Wood ducks are not territorial, two or
more houses can be placed on the same tree or post.
Boxes placed on posts in water should be 6-8
feet above the surface of the water. They can be placed as far as one
half mile from the water source but ideally, boxes on land should be 30-100
feet from shore. Chance of raccoons entering the box is greater on the
shore. Boxes near water should face the water; otherwise southern or western
entrance seems to be preferred.
Since the hen must lead her ducklings to water,
the habitat between house and shore should be free of major obstacles such
as highways, wire mesh fence and street curbing.
To mount on pipe, use U bolts on 32 inch
2x6. Space high and low enough to not interfear with house. Ofset nail
screw or bolt so it doesn't go through to pipe. Hook keyhole in back over
nail and secure with lag screws.
Wood Duck nest Box Maintenance:
Annual maintenance should be completed by March
1. Unscrew the top or front to clean. Add fresh sawdust and chain saw
chips if needed to maintain at least a three inch depth. To facilitate
spring maintenance, you may cluster your nest boxes in a small area near
a good marsh, lake or river. For example, 20-30 boxes in 10-20 acres. Boxes
may be painted or treated on outside only. Vigilant starling control will
be necessary. Remove their nests and eggs whenever they occur.
